Shining the Light and Exposing the Shame on Eating Disorders
đź“… 24th February to 2nd March 2025
Eating disorders like other mental health conditions develop and exist for many, regardless of gender, ages, appearance or diversity. What we know is that by creating safe spaces and with the right support Eating Disorder can be and will be overcome, however it is often one of the most underfunded and misunderstood of the Mental Health conditions.
Why is this?
Mental Health can be difficult to understand but the uncomfortable reality is that the risk to health and mortality are the highest of all Mental Health conditions for those caught in the destructive cycle of disordered eating. When the stakes are so high and the distress so palpable then it is clear this is not a simple illness driven by a desire to alter how we look .Â
What We Do Know:
- An eating disorder can involve using food to manage your feelings
- There will be a difficult relationship with food and weight, either eating too much or too little
- Disordered eating may be a way of coping through difficult times
- Eating disorders take many forms though the main ones are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder
Â
We cannot cover everything here but the impact of disordered eating is felt far and wide, across individuals, family and friends and each person struggling will have their own personal story behind their illness.Â
How We Can Help
Like all illnesses we often need different interventions and support to help us on our way. There are amazing resources out there to tap into which we have listed at the bottom of this article and of course visit your GP as soon as you can if you are concerned.
At S2BH our therapists will work with you to share and understand your story and its links with food and eating. They will navigate the journey with you by unravelling your experiences, helping you to make sense of your feelings, thoughts and behaviours, empower change through re-framing, strategies and building confidence. Most importantly offering hope and a way forward one step at a time.Â
There is a saying that shame is unable to thrive when we expose it and let the sunlight in so let’s keep talking about eating disorders and supporting those that need it.
